Aliena & Futures Land
Aliena & Futures Land
A founder-led strategic foresight practice combining technology, research, systems thinking and long-term strategy
Futures Land works with organisations making consequential decisions in environments shaped by technological, economic, institutional and behavioural change.
The practice is founded and led by Aliena, whose professional background spans technology, digital products, commercial strategy, business development, marketing and strategic foresight. That combination influences how Futures Land approaches the future: as a changing system of technologies, markets, institutions, incentives and human choices rather than a collection of isolated trends.
Clients work directly with Aliena throughout substantive engagements, from framing the original strategic question and interpreting research to Future World analysis, Preferred Future development and final strategic synthesis.
From technology to foresight
A practical view of technological change from several different positions.
Aliena's professional career developed across several layers of the technology industry, including software and web development, digital design, product work, business development, commercial leadership and strategic advisory work.
Moving across these functions created a practical view of technological change from several different positions: how products are built, how they reach markets, how companies sell and position them, how customer expectations evolve and how strategic decisions made early in a technology cycle can shape what becomes possible later.
Her academic background in International Relations and Political Science adds another layer to this perspective, particularly around systems, institutions, power, incentives and geopolitical change.
These strands eventually converged in strategic foresight. Futures Land grew from the idea that long-horizon research becomes considerably more useful when it remains connected to the organisation making the decision and to the future that organisation actually wants to create.
Building Futures Land
A growing body of proprietary intellectual infrastructure connects research about change with practical strategic decision-making.
Futures Land has developed around a growing body of proprietary intellectual infrastructure designed to connect research about change with practical strategic decision-making.
This includes the Preferred Futures Method, the 16 Archetypal Future Worlds, qualitative Company Digital Twins, a structured foresight knowledge architecture and research systems designed for continuous updating.
The practice uses this infrastructure at different levels of depth. One client may need an answer to a single consequential question. Another may require an executive workshop, a specialised research programme, an explicit strategic model of the organisation or a comprehensive process connecting its Preferred Future with adaptive strategy, roadmaps and signals.
The underlying analytical system remains consistent across those formats. Research and strategic knowledge can therefore accumulate, be reused and evolve instead of disappearing when an individual project ends.
Independent perspective, direct involvement
Futures Land is deliberately a specialist practice.
Clients do not move through layers of account management before reaching the person responsible for the strategic analysis. Aliena remains directly involved in framing the problem, determining what deserves investigation, challenging assumptions, interpreting the evidence and synthesising the implications for the decision.
This structure also allows the research agenda to cross conventional industry boundaries when the strategic question requires it. A change originating in AI, finance, regulation, infrastructure, demographics or another adjacent system may eventually matter more to a company than developments traditionally classified as part of its own industry.
The objective is to bring an independent perspective to the decision while remaining sufficiently close to the organisation to understand what the analysis actually means for its strategy.
Human judgement supported by advanced research systems
Strategically consequential interpretation remains a human responsibility.
Futures Land makes extensive use of AI and research automation where those technologies improve the breadth, speed, organisation and repeatability of analytical work.
They support activities such as research discovery, retrieval, classification, evidence organisation, structured knowledge maintenance and repeated analysis across large bodies of material.
Strategically consequential interpretation remains a human responsibility.
Determining which changes genuinely matter, recognising causal relationships, distinguishing an important signal from fashionable noise, challenging apparently reasonable assumptions and translating uncertainty into choices leadership can use all require judgement in relation to the specific organisation and decision.
This combination allows a specialist practice to work across a research field that would previously have required a much larger conventional team while keeping analytical responsibility clear.
An evolving research practice
The Futures Land system is developed through research as well as client application.
Industry and cross-industry research continuously adds to the knowledge base. Client engagements expose the methods to real strategic questions and organisational constraints. Internal foresight work provides another environment in which the same analytical system can be tested against consequential decisions.
The result is a practice intended to evolve with the environment it studies. New evidence can modify existing assumptions, signals can acquire or lose strategic significance, and methods can be refined as technologies and decision contexts change.
This continuous development matters because foresight itself cannot remain static while the systems being examined continue to evolve.
From Future With Love
Futures Land approaches foresight as a way of increasing agency over long-term decisions.
Companies participate in shaping the futures they eventually inhabit through the technologies they develop, investments they make, markets they enter, capabilities they build and institutions or behaviours they influence.
Strategic foresight creates a wider field in which to consider those choices. It allows leadership to examine consequences beyond the conditions visible today, define a future worth pursuing and build a strategy that can remain coherent as the surrounding environment changes.
From Future With Love expresses that orientation: curiosity about what may become possible, combined with responsibility for the futures created through decisions made in the present.

Work directly with Futures Land
If you are facing a strategic question whose consequences extend beyond the conditions visible today, the first conversation is about the decision itself: what is changing, what is at stake and what kind of foresight would be proportionate to the problem.
